Bali Charity Soccer Cup

Press Release : 11 March 2019

For many of us, the opportunity to participate in sports is a given. Unfortunately, the same may not be so for children in less fortunate circumstances. The Junior Sports Academy is committed to providing as many children as possible with the opportunity to experience the fun, camaraderie, skills and necessary social development that comes with participation in team sports.

Join us on Sunday, April 7 on the Finns Recreation Club field for 9am kickoff to the Bali Charity Cup – 7-a-side Soccer Tournament aimed at raising funds for disadvantaged children to be able to participate in sport. Register your side of 7 to 10 players for IDR1,500,000 per team or, if you can’t field a team, sign up individually at just IDR150K and they’ll find you a side to play with! The Bali Charity Cup is in support of kids from the Jodie O’Shea House with 100% of funds raised going towards full term sponsorship of these children’s enrolment at the Junior Sports Academy.

Sports sponsorship with the JSA goes a long way in helping to provide space, equipment and coaches to teach kids who can’t otherwise afford any sort of sports training or reap the rewards of such a valuable skills and education program. The Junior Sports Academy has already witnessed awesome results from kids who have been fortunate enough to receive sponsorship and who have been participating in weekly training sessions!

Sign up to play, register your team or opt to sponsor the day in some way and you could be sponsoring a future sports star! Register online now at finnsrecclub.com or at Finns Recreation Club Reception. Please contact aisling@finnsrecclub.com if you’d like to register to become a sponsor.

Melasti – Bali Islands Purification

Usually around 2 days before Nyepi is the Melasti Ceremony.

During this ceremony village communities travel together from their village to closest source of holy water, to some this may be a holy spring, to others its the sea. There are hundreds of people dresses in their Balinese formal ceremony attire, walking in the procession. Some carrying umbrellas, some playing the Balinese gamelan traditional music, some carry the cask that has the villages prized articles inside. As you can imagine the ceremony causes traffic ‘ issues ‘ given that many main roads are blocked for quite a while.

The aim of Melasti Ceremony is to remove impurities, of a village.

At the beach, river, lake or holy spring the casks and items in which ancestral spirits reside are laid down. Here the priest will pray and chant his mantras, flicking holy water, his flower and ringing his prayer bell. Around him, worshippers join in prayer.

Why the beach or holy spring? Water is a cleansing element in Balinese Hindu belief, thus, at the sea, all can be purified.  Both positive and negative elements are brought here to be cleansed, as in the Balinese belief of opposing forces are equally important for balance in the world.

So during Melasti Ceremony, both people and the world around them are purified, cleansed of bad thoughts, deeds and negative influences.

Bouncing Around in Bali

Press Release: 27 February 2019

Finns Recreation Club now offers a new game that already boasts widespread popularity throughout Europe, Australia and the US. The not-so-serious sports sensation – Zorb Soccer is available to hire and play at Finns!

An hilarious hybrid, the game appears to be a crossbred creation of billiards, bumper cars and football and it’s seriously funny to see. Zorb Soccer requires players to don a donut shaped, soft plastic inflatable called a ‘zorb’. Their upper bodies are protected in the ring, allowing only the legs to protrude so they can still run and kick the ball around the field. Much like soccer, the aim of the game is to get the ball into goal for your team. It is bubble body combat without the bumps and bruises and it’s guaranteed to get a giggle out of everyone. One of the best things about Zorb Soccer other than side splitting fun, is that you are protected from sharp elbows and hard surfaces by one huge, air filled floatie!

Zorb Soccer is now for hire at Finns Recreation Club. It provides hours of awesome, outdoor fun for family get togethers or holiday activities and at the recommended five players per team this game is a great option for birthday parties or as an addition to Bucks and Hens Day antics. Zorb Soccer can also be included in event packages as a team building activity or even a way to break the ice at staff gatherings!

Zorb Soccer is now available for hire at Rp 1,000,000  per hour and includes up to ten individual zorbs to make two complete teams. Finns members are entitled to up to 30% percent discount. Find out why this latest craze is so popular and book your mates in for a Bubble Battle today!

Nyepi Day – March 7th 2019

Wake up, no sound, everything’s shut, the airport’s shut, no planes flying in or out, no one on the streets, no light other than the morning rays of sun, wake up on Nyepi Day, the Day of Silence in Bali.

While the world holds its breath, spend the day with us in quiet celebration and spend an unforgettable night stargazing a sky full of stars.

The  “Day of Silence” this year is Thursday March 7th 2019. It is a Hindu celebration mainly in Bali. Nyepi Day is a day of silence, fasting and meditation for the Balinese. The evening prior there is a parade of Ogoh Ogoh (paper mache monsters) in every village to scare aware the evil spirits. The monsters represent all objects, people or anything that can disrupt human life. Observed from 6.a.m until 6.a.m next morning, Nyepi is silent so the bad spirits scared aware the night before do not return. It is also a day reserved for self reflection.  The main restrictions are no lightning fire (and light must be keep low), no working, no entertainment or pleasure no traveling and for some people no talking or eating at all. Hence, during Nyepi, with great tolerance from others, the island grinds to a halt for one day. With no one on the streets, no lights, no sound, the island is recharging itself.

The effect of these prohibitions is that Bali and its usual bustling streets are empty. There is little or no noise from TV or Radios and few sign of activity are seen even inside homes. The only people to be seen outdoors are the pecalang, traditional security who patrol the street to ensure the prohibitions are being followed. Although Nyepi is primarily a Hindu Holiday, non Hindu residents and tourists are not exempt from restrictions. Although they are free to do as they wish inside their hotel, no one is allowed on to the beaches or streets and the only airport in Bali remains closed for the entire day. The Exception granted are for emergency vehicles responding to life threatening conditions and women about give to birth. Nyepi night is a unforgettable night when the sky is full of stars and the silence is golden.

On day after Nyepi, known as Ngembak Geni (Relighting the fire), Social activity picks up again quickly, as families and friends gather to ask forgiveness from one another, and to perform certain religious ritual together. Fires and electricity are allowed again, and cooking of food resumes.

If you are already staying in Bali on the Day of Silence, enjoy the relaxing time. Nyepi is definitely something different and original and you cannot experience it anywhere else in the world!
